Bangladeshi-born, London-based author Monica Ali garnered international attention when her very first novel, Brick Lane, was nominated for the Booker prize in 2003. Like that compelling story, In The Kitchen also takes place in London but this time set in an up-and-coming hotel restaurant, roiling with immigrant workers from a dozen countries. Chef Gabriel Lightfoot runs the show - that is, until an impoverished porter turns up dead in the hotel basement.
