Everything Is Illuminated created a sensation for the twenty-five year old first-time author in 2002. His anticipated follow-up centered on the nine year-old protagonist Oskar Schell, a precocious, compulsive wunderkind whose father was killed in the World Trade Center attacks and in whose memory Schell embarks on an unusual quest. Foer’s unique use of typography, photographs and structure in the book further enhanced the unusual narrative.
